The prostate is a small gland located below the bladder, and it plays a major function in the male reproductive system by producing semen. As a man, the health of your prostate should be of utmost importance to you. Among men in the United States, prostate cancer is the second most common cancer; approximately one in seven men will be diagnosed in his life. As you age, your risk of prostate cancer increases exponentially, so it is particularly important for older men to attend to their prostates. While there is no way to guarantee that you will not contract prostate cancer, there are certain lifestyle changes you can make to reduce your chances.

Maintain A Healthy Weight

Studies indicate that men with higher BMIs are more likely to develop prostate cancer, so maintaining a healthy weight is important. If you are overweight, try losing weight by reducing the number of calories you eat and increasing the number of calories you burn on a daily basis. At Men’s Vitality Center, we can help you lose weight through our weight loss management program.

Eat The Right Foods

A low-fat, predominantly plant-based diet is important for your prostate health. Increase the number of fruits and vegetables you eat. Choose foods with antioxidants, such as tomatoes, brussel sprouts, broccoli, kale, watermelon, grapefruit, and guava. Increase the amount of soy you consume by eating tofu, soy nuts, or soy milk. Make an effort to consume more selenium, which research suggests may reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Selenium-rich foods include shellfish, tuna, liver, eggs, mushrooms, sunflower seeds, onions, and garlic.

Don’t Smoke

In general, smoking is terrible for your health, and increases your risk of all types of cancer, which may include prostate cancer. A meta-analysis of 24 different research studies indicated that cigarette smoking is a risk factor for prostate cancer. If you smoke, now is the time to quit. There are many resources out there to help people quit smoking, including classes, medications, counseling, and mobile apps.

Ejaculate Often

In the past, scientists believed that frequent ejaculation increased your risk of prostate cancer, but the latest research actually suggests that ejaculation could protect the prostate. Frequent ejaculation may help the prostate by helping flush out carcinogens and allowing fluids in the gland to turnover quicker, therefore reducing the risk of cancer. More research must be done to determine exactly how frequently one must ejaculate to see these benefits, but it is good to know that sex or masturbation will not cause harm to the prostate, and may in fact benefit it.
